These miniature gouache paintings document our street at a moment in time where development and speculation spillover from Vancouver to Vancouver Island has begun and real estate prices are escalating.
These are 10 of the houses on the street where I live in the South End neighbourhood of Nanaimo. This area was developed in the 19th century by people working in mining and forestry, on the territory of the Snuneymuxw (“Nanaimo”) people.
The paintings were offered to the resident of each home.
Ongoing project, 2017-present.
